As if a delicious dinner and a thorough "roasting" of Executive Director Steve Baker weren't enough to convince you to come out to support the 15 years of Grace Resource Center's good work, maybe you'll be tempted by a little rock 'n' roll. The pop-rock band Ambrosia will round out the evening's entertainment at the event on Tuesday at the Lilac Pavilion at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster. One of of America's best-loved pop bands during the '70s and early '80s, Ambrosia's hits include: "Biggest Part of Me," "How Much I Feel," "You're the Only Woman" and "Holdin' on to Yesterday." In addition, the evening will include a silent and live auction, a roast of Baker by community leaders and friends and entertainment by vocalist Alyssa Rossi of Palmdale. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. Befitting Baker's personal style, the dress code is western and/or business casual. Although it may be hard to top the funny stories that Baker tells on himself, lots of folks are coming out to try their best, including: Chris Spicher, AV Board of Trade president and owner of AV Florist; Rich Breault, Antelope Valley Press senior writer; Bob Montague, Adelphia; Norm Hickling, field deputy for L.A. County 5th District Supervisor Michael Antonovich; Lancaster Mayor Frank Roberts; Frank Visco, Visco Financial Insurance Services; George Clark, Baker's childhood friend; and Margie Hawkins, Baker's aunt. Although the evening is meant to be all in fun, the work that Baker and Grace Resource Center do is serious and vital. Proceeds from the dinner will go to operating funds and to help rehabilitate a building on Grace's property. The 4,000-square-foot building will provide a larger dining and meeting room, a food warehouse, and a storage and maintenance area. The estimated cost of the project is $250,000. Grace Resource Center is an emergency food distribution center. Grace helps 8,000 people each month with emergency groceries and hot "Souper" meals; counseling; a "welfare-to-work" P.O.W.E.R. class; Grace's Closet, a clothing and furniture ministry; Grace Thrift Super Center; and computer training classes. Grace has nine paid staff and the help of 400 volunteers in the various aspects of serving the Antelope Valley. Live auction items include: 3,000 square feet of tile roof provided by Weston Building Supplies and installed by a local roofer (a $9,000 value); a Sony "Big Screen" television; a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme "fire-engine red" SL four-door sedan from Robertson's Palmdale Honda; "Outdoor Barbecue Showcase" package; a piece of antique jewelry from Begué Jeweler; a Copodomonte Vase worth $1,800 from the law firm of R.Rex Parris; and a John Wayne collectible doll. The silent auction items include: Sperling's Furniture gift certificate; four tires from Hunter-Dodge; Bohn's Printing gift certificate; beauty makeover from Bianca's Beauty Secrets; one year of residential trash service from Waste Management of the Antelope Valley; and one year pest control service from Care Pest Solutions. Rossi, a student at Desert Christian High School, a member of Grace Chapel and a favorite singer of the Baker family, has performed at the Lancaster Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, Lancaster JetHawks minor league baseball games and many churches in the Valley. The dinner, which is sponsored by the Gilley Group of Lancaster, will have broadcast personality Mitchell Chase of Clear Channel and Adelphia as the master of ceremonies. Tickets are still available for $100 a person, $190 per couple or $720 per table of eight. Tickets will be sold at the door, but are limited.
